On Saturday 6th December, Chattertots families gathered for a festive afternoon of Christmas magic at Neville Hall in Waltham St Lawrence – bringing together children with Down Syndrome and their families from across Berkshire for seasonal celebration and joy.
The party welcomed 17 families, with 18 children with Down Syndrome joining the Christmas festivities alongside their families.
A Warm Welcome on a Winter's Day
We extend our heartfelt thanks to Neville Hall for providing such a welcoming venue for our Christmas celebration. Special gratitude goes to John Kiss, our last-minute hero, who resolved a heating issue just in time to ensure families could enjoy the party in cosy comfort rather than shivering through a chilly December afternoon!
A Festive Fashion Parade
Children arrived looking absolutely festive in a wonderful array of Christmas jumpers, winter-themed outfits, and – because no Christmas party would be complete without a touch of sparkle – a delightful collection of princess dresses fit for a winter ball. The hall was filled with Elsas, snowflakes, and Father Christmases, creating a truly magical seasonal atmosphere.
Winter Wonderland Activities
The afternoon was packed with festive fun designed to engage children with Down Syndrome of all ages and abilities:
· The Great Christmas Snowball Fight – Soft foam snowballs flew through the air as children and parents embraced their competitive Christmas spirit. The laughter and friendly rivalry brought warmth to the winter celebration.
· Winter Snowstorm Magic – Our snow machine transformed the hall into a proper winter wonderland, creating an enchanting scene as children played in the swirling artificial snow. The delight on their faces captured the true magic of Christmas.
· Dress the Parent as a Snowman – This festive game brought out everyone's creative spirit as children enthusiastically transformed the parents into snowmen using an array of craft materials. The results ranged from traditional Frosty-style creations to rather avant-garde interpretations that would have puzzled even the most artistic snowman!
Santa's Special Visit
The highlight of the afternoon arrived when Father Christmas himself made his entrance (slightly delayed, but perfectly timed nonetheless). Each child with Down Syndrome received a carefully chosen, age-appropriate gift including cosy seasonal socks to keep little toes warm through the winter months, water bottles, and other festive treats. The excitement and joy as children opened their presents perfectly captured the spirit of Christmas giving.
Siblings who attended joined in the seasonal festivities, adding to the warm family atmosphere and making it a truly inclusive celebration for all.
The Gift of Community at Christmas
Christmas is a time for connection, and this annual event provides something truly special – the opportunity for children with Down Syndrome to celebrate together in an understanding, inclusive environment. Many of our children are the only pupil with Down Syndrome in their school, making these festive gatherings especially precious for social connection and the chance to share the magic of the season with peers who understand their experiences.
For parents, the Christmas party offers a rare chance to relax and celebrate the season alongside other families who truly understand the joys and challenges of raising a child with Down Syndrome. These connections – forged over shared Christmas festivities, mutual support, and seasonal cheer – create a network of understanding that extends far beyond a single December afternoon and into the new year ahead.
The party demonstrates what inclusive Christmas celebration looks like: an event where every child with Down Syndrome can participate fully in the seasonal fun, where differences are embraced as part of the festive tapestry, and where families feel welcomed and valued during this special time of year.
It's a reminder of why Chattertots exists – to ensure that children with Down Syndrome across Berkshire have access to community, support, and opportunities to experience the magic and joy of celebrations like Christmas to the fullest.

From all of us at Chattertots, we wish you a wonderful Christmas season and a happy new year!
